London to Aviemore by Train

By Aviemore Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

London has two ways to reach Aviemore without changing trains, and each runs once a day. LNER’s direct train leaves King’s Cross at 12:03 and takes 7h 23m, arriving at about 19:26 after 16 stops. The Caledonian Sleeper leaves Euston at 21:15 and runs straight through to Aviemore overnight in 10h 24m, getting in at about 07:39.

Sleeper or daytime train

The sleeper is the choice if you want a full first day in Aviemore: you board in the evening, sleep on the way and arrive with the morning ahead of you, with no change at any point. The 12:03 from King’s Cross suits anyone who prefers to travel by day and is happy to reach Aviemore in the evening, and it is about three hours quicker than the sleeper.

Changing at Edinburgh

If neither fits, LNER runs from King’s Cross to Edinburgh Waverley in about 4h 10m and a ScotRail train covers the remaining three hours to Aviemore. With a typical wait of around 50 minutes at Waverley, the trip takes about 8h, and on the weekday timetable we checked the connecting departures from King’s Cross were only at 05:48, 08:30, 12:30 and 14:30. On a typical run the 05:48 reaches Aviemore at about 13:48, and the 08:30 at about 16:30, almost three hours before the 12:03 direct train arrives.

A three-train alternative from Euston, with Avanti West Coast to Preston, TransPennine Express from Preston to Haymarket and ScotRail on to Aviemore, left Euston at 08:30, 12:30 and 14:30 and took about the same time overall. Other combinations through York, Perth or Stirling took around eight hours as well, none close to the direct train’s 7h 23m, so the choice of daytime train comes down to whether the 12:03 direct suits you.

Arriving

Off the sleeper or the LNER train alike, Aviemore station is about 430 metres from Grampian Road, roughly a six-minute walk.
