Six direct ScotRail and LNER trains a day link Edinburgh Waverley with Aviemore, and on the weekday we checked they left at 08:38, 10:33, 13:32, 16:33, 17:33 and 19:34. Each takes just under three hours, 2h 56m on a typical run and 2h 51m on the fastest, with eight stops on the way and no change. On a typical run the 08:38 reaches Aviemore at about 11:34 and the 19:34 at about 22:30. If one of those times suits you, the direct train from Waverley is the obvious choice.
The direct departures found are far apart, three hours from the 13:32 to the 16:33, and the earliest is the 08:38. The planner filled some of them with a change at Perth, at about 3h 11m in total, leaving Waverley at 06:36, 09:39, 11:35, 14:41 and 18:41. That is only around 15 minutes slower than the direct train, so the 06:36 gets you to Aviemore well ahead of the 08:38 direct train, and the 14:41 falls inside the long afternoon gap.
Trains with a change at Stirling took a similar 3h 15m and left Waverley at 06:32, 09:35, 11:34 and 14:34, almost alongside the Perth ones, so they add little choice. Routes through Glasgow Queen Street were much slower, at almost four hours, and are not worth considering when a Perth connection is available.
The 19:34 is the latest direct train we found from Waverley to Aviemore, and the 18:41 the latest with a change at Perth, so an evening start leaves little room for error. If you are travelling after work, the 17:33 direct is the comfortable option, with the 19:34 as the fallback.
Aviemore station is around six minutes on foot from Grampian Road, a distance of some 430 metres, so the walk adds very little to the three hours from Edinburgh.
