There is no direct train from Dundee to Aviemore, but there is only one change. A ScotRail train runs from Dundee to Perth in about 24 minutes, and from Perth a second ScotRail or LNER train takes about 1h 34m to Aviemore. On a typical journey the whole trip comes to about 2h 19m, and the quickest connection on the planner did it in just under two hours.
With 1h 58m spent on the two trains, a typical journey leaves about 20 minutes at Perth to change. On the weekday timetable we checked these connections left Dundee at 05:48, 07:12, 09:15, 10:18, 11:15, 12:15, 14:14, 15:52, 17:07, 18:08 and 19:47, and the earliest of them, the 05:48, has you in Aviemore at about 08:07 on a typical journey. The Dundee to Perth leg is so short that the Perth wait is almost as long as the ride itself.
That list is unevenly spaced. On it the 07:12 is followed by the 09:15, two hours later, and the 12:15 by the 14:14, almost as long. If you are leaving Dundee in the morning or around midday, these are the times to fix first.
Other routings from Dundee, changing at Ladybank, Stirling, Gleneagles or Dunblane, took from about three hours to almost four, so the plain Perth change beats them every time.
The 19:47 is the latest connection found that is train all the way. After it, the planner offered a train to Perth followed by a bus to Aviemore, leaving Dundee at 22:01 and 23:49 and taking about 2h 32m. That is only a quarter of an hour slower than the rail connection, so a late finish in Dundee does not rule out reaching Aviemore that night.
Grampian Road, at the centre of Aviemore, is a six-minute walk from the platform, about 430 metres.
Journey times and changes below come from the rail and bus timetables for Tuesday 1 December 2026. Weekend and holiday timetables differ, so check the day you travel.
