Glasgow to Aviemore by Train

By Aviemore Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

From Glasgow, take a direct ScotRail train from Queen Street. Five ran on the weekday timetable we checked, at 07:07, 10:08, 12:07, 15:07 and 19:07, and they take about 2h 42m to Aviemore, 2h 29m on the quickest, with six stops along the way. These trains run straight through, so once aboard at Queen Street there is nothing to do until Aviemore. On a typical run the 07:07 gets there at about 09:49 and the 19:07 at about 21:49.

Changing at Perth

Between those five, the planner showed Queen Street departures with a change at Perth taking about 2h 50m, only eight minutes more than the direct service. They left at 08:40, 10:41, 13:40, 16:38, 17:40 and 19:37. Put the two kinds of train together and there is a way to Aviemore from Glasgow roughly every hour and a half from 07:07 to 19:37.

That makes the Perth change the sensible fallback rather than a compromise. If the 12:07 direct is too early and the 15:07 too late, the 13:40 via Perth fits between them and arrives well before the 15:07 would.

A change at Stirling took longer, about 3h 11m, and a route via Haymarket about 3h 46m, so neither is worth choosing over a Perth connection. A few journeys changing at Camelon and Stirling, or at Gleneagles, took about 3h 16m and 3h 20m respectively.

The last departures

The latest all-rail options from Glasgow on the weekday list were the 19:07 direct and the 19:37 with a change at Perth. There was also a Stirling connection at 19:22, but it is slower than both, so treat the 19:37 as the real cut-off for an evening train up to Aviemore; later than that, what the planner offered was a train to Perth and a bus on, at 21:40 and 23:10.

Arriving

From Aviemore station, Grampian Road is about 430 metres away, around six minutes’ walk, which brings you into the centre almost as soon as the Glasgow train has gone.
